Pfeffernusse
Ingredients
1/3 cup dark corn syrup
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup vegetable shortening
1 egg
2 1/4 cups flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp cloves
1/4 tsp allspice
1/4 tsp cinnamon
confectioners sugar
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease baking sheets. Bring syrup and honey to a simmer in a small pot over medium heat. Insert metal blade in food processor. Add sugar and shortening to work bowl and, with motor running, slowly pour honey mixture through feed tube. Process until blended, about 30 seconds, stopping once to scrape bowl. Remove cover and let cool 15 minutes. Add egg and process until combined, about 5 seconds. Add flour, baking soda and spices; pulse to incorporate, 7 to 8 pulses. Chill dough for 30 minutes. With floured hands, shape dough into 1" balls. Place 2" apart on baking sheets and bake until set, 10 to 12 minutes. Let cool on wire rack, then sprinkle with confectioners sugar.
